There are lots of benefits that one can get out of therapy including support, problem solving skills, and coping strategies for a wide range of issues. Therapists provide a non-biased fresh or different perspective on a problem that you are dealing with in your life currently. Benefits of therapy depend on your level of commitment and your level of readiness for change. Some other benefits include boosting self confidence or self esteem, improving communication skills, learning/finding new coping skills, attaining a better understanding of yourself, changing old patterns and developing new ones, or managing negative emotions feelings.
At the initial visit for therapy, you and your therapist will get to know each other and you will get an idea on how the future sessions may look. You will discuss the symptoms you are having, the frequency of these symptoms, and how they are impacting your life on a regular basis. The initial visit will include what your goals are you would like to achieve in therapy moving forward. From this point forward, you will begin to work towards the goals that were identified in the first session from that point forward.
There is no definitive answer on this. Each individual is different on how long it will take for them to “feel better”, as this can take a few sessions, several weeks, or even years. After the first session though, you should begin to have hope that things will get better.

All medical records for clients are kept in a secure, HIPAA compliant electronic health record. The only time information will be shared regarding your therapy is if you sign a release of information for a specific health provider or a family member or to send information to insurance. However, confidentiality can be broken if you disclose abuse or neglect of a child or elderly person, or if you wish to harm yourself or someone else. If you have any questions about this, please speak with your therapist regarding this.
