Trauma Therapy
Has Trauma Fueled A Sense Of Sadness, Irritability, Or Disassociation That’s Difficult To Overcome?
Have you gone through a painful experience that causes frequent flashbacks or nightmares? Are you struggling to overcome feelings of sadness and despair? Do you fear that any event could re-trigger these intense emotions within you, causing you to withdraw from the people you care about and the things you once enjoyed?
Perhaps you’ve suffered from abuse or neglect during childhood that still affects you to this day. If someone you thought you trusted—like a parent, guardian, or friend—has caused you physical or emotional harm when you were young, you might feel insecure in your relationships or find it easier to avoid everyone altogether.
Trauma Sticks With You And Can Arise In A Multitude Of Ways
When you go through something that brings you great distress, the traumatic symptoms that ensue can affect you, both physically and mentally. The thing about trauma is that it stores itself in the body, and—without proper treatment—it can manifest in ways that you may not always understand.
Trauma can be caused by a wide range of issues and experiences that can include—but are not limited to:
- Abuse
- Longstanding neglect
- A complex death or loss of a loved one
- Witnessing a near-death experience
- Divorce
- Economic hardship
- Losing your job
During these challenging times, it can be easy to feel overcome with negative self-beliefs or feelings of low self-worth, especially if you blame yourself for the things that have happened. At Winding Roads Counseling, we offer you a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can challenge negative ideas about yourself, process your trauma, and finally reset your life.
Everyone Is Affected By Trauma In Their Own Way
Although you may feel alone in your battle, the truth is that almost everyone goes through some sort of trauma at some point in their lives. Studies show that about sixty percent of men and fifty percent of women report experiencing at least one traumatic event in their lives.
And while these numbers are high, they still don’t paint a complete picture, as many instances of trauma go unreported each and every day. People often downplay their feelings and experiences because of shame, discomfort, or fear.
There are many factors that can increase the risk of trauma, including mental health issues, socioeconomic status, the environment in which you were raised, or the community that you grew up in. This can lead to life-long health issues, including diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart issues, and substance abuse.
When experiencing the physical and mental toll brought on by trauma, it can be easy to feel alone—and challenging to find a way out. Even though you’ve made it this far on your own, finding a counselor to help you process your trauma can work wonders in putting you on the right path toward healing. Trauma therapy at Winding Roads Counseling gives you an ally who can help you make sense of the past while teaching you healthy ways of coping with symptoms and releasing any negative sensations or emotions associated with your experience.
"In fact, 61 percent of adults in this country reported to have suffered from at least one Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE)—any experience that can be deemed traumatic that happened before the age of 17."
Trauma Therapy At Winding Roads Counseling Can Help You Find Sustained Healing And Peace
Here at Winding Roads Counseling, our goal is to help you understand the origin or your distress as well as the situations that have influenced your trauma so that we can work to heal the parts of your brain that are wounded. We want you to realize that your experiences are valid—no matter how they have affected you—and that you are a survivor, not a victim.
Of course, finding a therapist who’s the right fit for you is important. There’s never a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to finding the treatment methods that work best for your trauma.
At Winding Roads Counseling, we will get to know you as an individual to learn more about the type of trauma you’re going through so that you can understand how it’s impacting your personal development. This way, you can use the methods of healing that you gain from therapy to reduce symptoms whenever they arise.
Our approach to trauma therapy involves a wide range of treatment methods, which include:
- Traditional Talk Therapy: enables you to work through the issues that negatively impact your life by verbally communicating the thoughts, emotions, and situations that are causing you distress
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): uses psychoeducation and behavioral techniques to give you a space to safely process your trauma so that you can challenge intrusive thoughts and alter the negative behaviors and emotions that hold you back
- Brainspotting (BSP): a treatment method that works with your body and mind using bilateral stimulation to release trauma and reprocess how you react to the negative experiences and emotions that you’re going through
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR): best known for relieving symptoms of PTSD by focusing on rapid eye movements and other forms of bilateral brain stimulation to help you process and heal from trauma
Regardless of the nature of your experience, your treatment method will be suited to best fit your needs as it relates to healing from your trauma. If you feel like it’s time to find true healing from the pain and suffering brought on by your trauma, then our team of counselors are determined to work alongside you to help you find the peace that you deserve.
Maybe You’re Thinking About Trauma Therapy, But Still Have Some Concerns…
Working alongside a therapist can teach you healthy coping strategies to help you get through the physical and emotional pain brought on by your trauma. We aren’t here to make you relive your worst experiences or make you feel any more overwhelmed than you already do.
Our goal is to reduce your trauma symptoms by building healthy coping strategies you can use when you feel triggered. If you ever feel uncomfortable at the pace that we’re going, all you have to do is communicate, and we will slow down or switch our approach to best suit your needs.
How long will it take before I’m healed from my trauma?
Most of our clients report that they begin to feel a sense of relief from the trauma they’ve experienced almost immediately after beginning to work with their counselor. This is mainly due to the healthy coping strategies and techniques that are provided in each session. That said, someone may be in therapy for a more extended period if they experienced intense or long-term trauma.
While we can provide you the tools needed to improve your sleep, limit your flashbacks, and combat the intrusive thoughts that are holding you back, every individual heals from their trauma in their own ways and on their own terms. The key is for you to focus on your healing journey so that you can feel at peace within yourself.
Openly discussing uncomfortable emotions can seem frightening on the surface. While there will be times when you will talk about your trauma in counseling sessions, we will never force you to do something that you’re not ready for.
It’s also good to know that you have options. Certain treatments like EMDR or BSP can provide you with a safe way to heal from trauma without even having to converse about what happened in significant detail. No matter what method works best for your healing, in therapy, we are here to help you overcome the symptoms and/or aftermath of the trauma that you’ve endured.
